Extreme Heat Alert Issued In Canton, Shelters To Open

With a major heat wave expected to strike Sunday, June 22, Canton officials have announced their extreme heat protocols.

CANTON, CT — Local officials have enacted severe hot weather protocols, which start Sunday, June 22, as the area is expected to experience its first major heat wave of 2025.

Temperatures are expected to go well into the 90s and approach or exceed 100 degrees, with heat indexes making it feel much worse.

Meanwhile, the Town of Canton will have cooling centers available for residents at the following locations/times starting on Monday, June 23. Those include:

• Canton Community Center, 40 Dyer Ave., Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

• Canton Public Library, 40 Dyer Ave., Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The town cooling centers have water faucets, but residents are asked to bring their own food.

"Please remember to also bring medications, emergency contact phone numbers, and any other items you may need during the day/Service dogs are always welcome," wrote the Town of Canton in an announcement.

Pool reopens

Meanwyile, Mills Pond Pool will open for the season on Saturday, June 21.

Hours are Monday-Friday, 1:30 to 8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 7:30 p.m.

Entry fee is $5 per person for Canton residents, $8 per person for non-residents, or by purchasing a 2025 pool pass.

Children under the age of 2 are free. Payment can be made by cash, check, or credit card ($15 CC minimum).

Daily admission & memberships include use of both the pool and splash pad; anyone entering the facility for the splash pad only will be required to pay the daily entry fee or use a 2025 membership.
