CANTON, CT — A giant snake native to Africa was found in Canton recently when a Metropolitan District of Connecticut police officer made the shocking discovery.

According to the Burlington & Canton Animal Control Department, the ball python was dumped at the Nepaug Reservoir area at about 3:55 p.m. off Route 202.

Such animals are native to the west and central African regions and can grow as large as 6 feet in length. They're often brought into the U.S. as pets.

Introducing non-native animals into the environment is illegal and it is a problem in many parts of the country, with Florida home to many non-native snake species.

According to the regional animal control department that serves Burlington and Canton, the snake was found on Friday, Sept. 13, and it is safe and being cared for.

Officials said they believe the person(s) responsible fled the scene.
