Labor Day In Canton, What's Closed?

Monday, Sept. 1, is Labor Day, with people being treated to one last long weekend of summer.

CANTON, CT — With summer's unofficial end coming this weekend, folks have one more day of relaxation on Monday, Sept. 1, Labor Day.

And, because of that, the Town of Canton has announced impacts to municipal services due to the holiday. Among them:

• All Canton town offices, including Canton Town Hall, will be closed on Monday, Sept. 1. They will reopen as normal on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

• The Canton Public Library will be closed for Labor Day weekend on Saturday, Aug. 30, and Monday, Sept. 1. It will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Canton public schools are closed for the Labor Day holiday, and they will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in September.

It is an "annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers," wrote federal authorities.

"The holiday is rooted in the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being," wrote federal officials.
