Severe Storms Clobber Canton, Roads Reopening: UPDATE

Many Canton roadways were severely impacted by Sunday afternoon's strong thunderstorms that hit the area.

CANTON, CT — Canton was among many towns in the state hit hard by several road closures and impacts following Sunday's strong line of thunderstorms that hit the area.

The Town of Canton reported multiple downed power lines and trees blocking roadways throughout town.

Local leaders said town public works and power company employees were working to clear the roadways and restore any lost power.

Those operations started immediately on Sunday and continued Monday.

"Canton DPW and Eversource are working hard to keep up with clearing the debris and restoring power," wrote the Town of Canton late Sunday afternoon.

"Eversource has been notified and is in the area. Please avoid any unnecessary travel and avoid downed power lines."

The Canton Police Department, later in the day, reported some roads were reopening, including Country Lane, which was initially completely blocked off to traffic.

Among the other impacted roads initially were:

• River Road (town bridge to Bridge Street) — Trees and wires down

• Birch Knoll (Closer to Route 44)

• Gemstone and Erickson roads

• Canton Senior Center - Garden Area has down trees & wires

• Lawton Road

Residents are still being urged to treat all down wires as live wires.
