Falling on the last Monday of May each year, Memorial Day honors those who lost their lives while serving in the military. It's a federal holiday that many people get off from work, resulting in a three-day weekend.
This year, Memorial Day falls on May 27, and for many, this holiday weekend marks the unofficial start of summer. We've rounded up some things to do Memorial Day Weekend in and around Canton. Please note: We recommend calling ahead to confirm the hours and access before you head out the door.
Canton Memorial Day Parade
When: Sunday May 26 – 10:00 a.m.
Where: Canton Intermediate School, 39 Dyer Ave., Canton, CT 06019
What: The annual Canton Memorial Day Parade will set off from the Intermediate School and conclude at Village Cemetery for a memorial service. Veterans are invited to meet at the Community Center at 8:00 a.m. for coffee and donuts before the parade.

Fairy Houses
When: Sunday, May 26 – 1:30 p.m.
Where: Bleekley Community Library, 10 Central Ave., New Hartford, CT 06057
What: In nearby New Hartford, children and families can create a fairy house using sticks, bark, leaves and other natural materials. This event is for children aged 4-11, and participants are encouraged to bring supplies.
West Hartford Memorial Day Parade
When: Monday, May 27 – 10:00 a.m.
Where: West Hartford Center, 580 Fern St., West Hartford, CT 06107
What: A short drive away in West Hartford, the annual Memorial Day Parade will highlight local veterans and honor the sacrifices of those who died while serving our country. The parade will march down Farmington Avenue and conclude at the West Hartford Town Hall.

Farmers Market at Brignole Vineyards
When: Monday, May 27 – 1:00 p.m.
Where: Brignole Vinyards, 103 Hartford Ave., East Granby, CT 06026
What: Down the road in East Granby, the weekly Summer Farmers Market at Brignole Vineyards opens on Memorial Day with over a dozen local vendors. Shoppers can explore stands with produce, fruit, baked goods and crafts.
