The Cheshire Senior Center is going to get a new elevator after years of delays.
The Town Council this week approved the appointment of an architect for the project that will replace the elevator at the center with a new hydraulic one in the existing shaft.
"This project has been going on for a couple of years," said Councilman James Sima. "Initially we felt we would go out for contractors for a design bid but we got numbers that were all over the place and were higher than we anticipated."
Instead, it was decided that the plans should be designed first so everyone is on the same page when it comes to bidding, he said.
The architect who will design the plans is Salamone and Associates of Hamden, who was involved in an earlier project at the center. The firm wasn't the lowest bidder but the town was able to negotiate their price down, officials said.
