DANBURY, CT — If you’re like many of your Danbury neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:

  • House of Grace Ministries shelters, feeds, clothes and assists with the case management and assistance of people in need, with special emphasis on homeless veterans.
  • The Center for Empowerment and Education provides services in the form of counseling and advocacy, crisis intervention, and emergency shelter with for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • Danbury Grassroots Academy provides a structured after-school environment for select students that emphasizes education, character, tennis, and health. Specific and long term objectives are to improve report card grades, reading levels, high school graduation rates and establish career paths or college education.
  • Daily Bread Food Pantry has been distributing food free of charge from their building in downtown Danbury since 1984.
  • Dream Come True of Western Connecticut fulfills the dreams of seriously, chronically and terminally ill children, ages 4 to 19.
