Danbury Local Hero: 'Empathetic And Without Prejudice'

Emergency room nurse Sheila Mortara is "just what every patient wants when you are scared and ill."

DANBURY, CT — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented times. Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these everyday heroes.

Susan Cesareo nominated emergency room nurse and Danbury resident Sheila Mortara as a Patch Local Hero.

In addition to working full-time in the New Milford Hospital ER, Mortara is busy raising four children with her husband. Still, she puts her life on the line every day, doing the initial intake of patients into the hospital, Cesareo said. "And she does it with a smile."

"She is selfless in her professional position, empathetic and without prejudice to all. She is always first to help her fellow workers, works extra hours to keep staffing appropriate," according to Cesareo. "As a patient, when she comes to your side she is smiling and warm and reassuring. Just what every patient wants when you are scared and ill."
