Danbury Secures $7 Million In State Funds For King Street Primary School Upgrades
King Street Primary School in Danbury to undergo $7 million in state-funded renovations and safety improvements.
DANBURY, CT — King Street Primary School in Danbury is set to receive $7 million in state bond funding for infrastructure renovations and safety upgrades, according to an announcement Wednesday by State Rep. Farley A. Santos.
The funding, awarded through a collaboration among Santos, Mayor Roberto Alves, Sen. Julie Kushner, Rep. Bob Godfrey, Rep. Ken Gucker, and Rep. Raghib Allie-Brennan, will cover critical updates to the school, including the installation of permanent classroom walls. The building has lacked enclosed classrooms since it was constructed in the 1970s.
The project qualifies for an 80 percent state reimbursement rate, significantly higher than the city's standard rate of 64.29 percent for school construction projects.

Santos, who attended King Street Primary as a child, noted that the open classroom layout made learning difficult. “I remember how difficult it was to try to learn English in a classroom with no walls,” he said. “It was distracting then, and 30 years later, those classrooms remain the same.”
Mayor Alves praised the funding as a long-awaited solution to a key safety concern. “The walls at King Street Primary are a critical, security need that our teachers and students have long deserved,” Alves said.

The school renovation is part of nearly $59 million in state aid secured for Danbury during the 2025 legislative session, supporting education, infrastructure, nonprofits, and economic development.
Santos credited the funding to strong coordination among local and state officials. “This is what partnership looks like,” he said. “Local and state leaders coming together to prioritize the needs of our community.”
