DARIEN, CT — Since January, the Darien Police Department has received 14 reports of catalytic converter thefts — a crime cops told the newspaper is difficult to predict, track and apprehend — The Darien Times reported.

Thefts in Darien typically take place in train station parking lots, though they've been reported recently at Whole Foods, the Darien Town Hall and Ox Ridge Elementary School, the newspaper said.

Stealing a catalytic converter can take less than a minute — and car owners may not notice the part is gone until they start driving and hear a loud rattling noise, Chief Don Anderson told The Darien Times.
