3 Catalytic Converter Thefts Reported In 1 Day, Darien Police Say

Police said they responded to three reports of catalytic converter thefts in town on July 12.

DARIEN, CT — Three catalytic converter thefts were reported in Darien on July 12, according to police.

On that date at approximately 12:54 p.m., officers responded to the Mobile gas station in the 170 block of Noroton Ave. on a report of a catalytic converter theft.

A gas station employee told police the car part was stolen from a 2019 Kia Sportage during the overnight hours.

Later in the day at approximately 3:08 p.m., police said, officers responded to a home on William Street where a victim stated a catalytic converter was stolen from his 2007 Honda Accord during the overnight hours.

At approximately 6:58 p.m., officers were called to a home on Joseph Street on a report of another theft.

A victim there said a catalytic converter was also stolen from their 2007 Honda Accord, police noted.

Surveillance footage from a nearby home showed three suspects approaching the victim's vehicle at 4:55 a.m., police said.

In 2022, Gov. Ned Lamont signed a bill into law that aimed to deter catalytic converter thefts, which exploded nationally around the time of the COVID-19 pandemic.
