Apple AirTag Helped Police Nab Moped Theft Suspect: Darien PD

A moped stolen in Darien was later recovered in Stamford, according to police.

DARIEN, CT — An Apple AirTag helped police nab a suspect accused of stealing a moped from a train station parking lot in Darien, according to police.

Demetrios Roumeliotes, 46, of Putnam, was arrested at Imported Cars of Stamford on Elm Street in Stamford on Aug. 7 and charged with larceny of a motor vehicle - first offense, and possession of a controlled substance - first offense, according to his arrest report.

A victim reported his 2024 Honda NP50 moped was stolen and provided police with tracking information from an Apple AirTag attached to the vehicle, police said in Roumeliotes' arrest report.

"The investigation led officers to Imported Cars of Stamford, where the AirTag and a helmet rack from the moped were recovered in a dumpster," police said. "Surveillance footage from the train station revealed a suspect disassembling and stealing the moped."

On Aug. 7, detectives found the stolen moped in Stamford and, with the help of Stamford police, arrested Roumeliotes who was identified as the person in the surveillance footage, police noted.

During processing, detectives "discovered evidence of suspected PCP" in Roumeliotes' possession, police said.

Roumeliotes was unable to post a $25,000 bond. He's scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Aug. 25.
