Aquarion Seeing High Demand, But No Emergency

A spokesman from Aquarion Water told Patch Wednesday morning that the company was experiencing peak water demand but that no emergency had been declared, despite early reports to the contrary.

Aquarion Public Relations Manager Lorraine Bukowski said that company officials were meeting in the late morning to discuss voluntary guidelines. Those would likely include asking residents not to wash their cars, to avoid watering lawns at peak usage times, and to use watering cans instead of hoses to hydrate plants.

None of the usage guidelines would be mandatory, however.

The company—whose service areas include Darien, New Canaan, Greenwich, and Westport—experienced unprecedented demand yesterday, pumping a record 140 million gallons.

Darien and surrounding areas remain under a heat advisory through 7 p.m. tonight, with forecasters again calling for temperatures in the mid- to upper-90s.

As a reminder, cooling centers in Darien include:

• Town Hall
• The Darien Senior Activities Center, open until 3:00 p.m.
• The YWCA, open until 4:00 p.m.
