DARIEN, CT — The Darien Board of Selectmen late last month approved the creation of the Pear Tree Point Beach Building Committee, and now volunteers are being sought to help move the long-awaited project forward.

Darien is seeking five members of the public to serve on the committee, which will oversee the construction of the recently approved $9 million improvement project at Pear Tree Point Beach.

The project includes the demolition of existing site features, new stormwater infrastructure, parking lot improvements, concrete curbing and sidewalks, boat launch ramp improvements, landscaping upgrades, restoration of existing wetlands, dredging, and other beach enhancements.

The committee, which is required for projects over $1 million, will need volunteers with experience in building trades, construction management and/or architecture. The committee will also feature ex officio members.

Selectman Marcy Minnick volunteered to serve on the committee during the most recent Board of Selectmen meeting, which is available to watch on demand on Darien TV79.

More information on the building committee's specific charge can be found here, and any questions may be directed to the Selectmen's office.

The process for the Pear Tree Point Beach project has been lengthy, stretching as far back as 2018 with the formation of another Pear Tree Point Beach Building Committee.

The committee was placed on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic and eventually dissolved. It also took some time to receive permitting from CT-DEEP.

First Selectman Jon Zagrodzky said during the Sept. 29 Board of Selectmen meeting that construction could take six months to complete.
