Fire Log: Two Gas Scares and a Hazmat Spill
Firefighters also responded to the scene of a burning branch last Wednesday.

Monday, May 24
FIRE ALARM ACTIVATION: The Darien Fire Department, the Noroton Fire Department, and Noroton Heights Fire all responded to a fire alarm activation at 24 Old Kings Highway South around 12:28 p.m. The source of the smoke was determined to be a wax melting machine.

GAS ODOR: A report of a gas leak brought the Darien Fire Department to 12 Sunset Road around 10:12 p.m. After investigating, firefighters were unable to locate any gas or obtain any positive readings with detection equipment.

BURNING BRANCH: A tree branch that fell onto a wire near 123 Long Neck Point Road caught on fire around 6:56 p.m., bringing the Noroton Fire Department to the scene to extinguish the blaze. A fire official said the branch had "basically grown around the wire."
HAZARDOUS MATERIAL CONDITION: The Noroton Fire Department responded to a report of a chemical spill at 10 Glen Gorham Lane around 6:56 p.m. A fire official said an automatic pool cover motor had burned out and began leaking hydraulic fluid. Firefighters were able to clean the spill with an absorbent substance known as "speedi-dri."
Thursday, May 27
GAS ODOR: The Noroton Fire Department responded to a report of a gas odor at 1 Berry lane around 3:01 a.m. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they were unable to locate any gas.
FIRE ALARM ACTIVATIONS: The Noroton Fire Department responded to fire alarm activations at Hindley Elementary School (10 Nearwater Lane) twice in two days: on May 27 at 4:10 p.m. and on May 28 at 12:09 p.m. Both incidents were attributed to a malfunction.
Friday, May 28
MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS/INJURIES: The Darien Fire Department responded to two Motor Vehicle Accidents/Injuries over the holiday weekend, both on I-95 North. The first came Saturday at 4:55 p.m., the second came later the same day at 7:53 p.m.
Sunday, May 30
SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE: Around 12:44 p.m., the Darien Fire Department responded to a report of a suspicious package at the I-95 North Darien Service Plaza. Firefighters assisted state troopers in investigating the unattended briefcase, which was ultimately found to be harmless.
