Woman Charged With Embezzling $139K from Darien Rowayton Bank

A Bridgeport woman was charged last week with embezzling some $139,000 in funds from Darien Rowayton Bank (1001 Post Rd.), according to .
Connie Hernandez, 53, of Bridgeport was arrested on a warrant for first degree larceny Wednesday at her home in Bridgeport. She was held on $10,000 bond and is set to appear in court next on Nov. 4.
According to Det. Mark Cappelli, bank employees contacted police in June to report that Hernandez, a mortgage and loan processor, had been diverting funds since May 2009 into an account she held at the bank.

The bank reportedly detected discrepancies in paperwork and deposits under Hernandez's supervision which indicated that she had been stealing portions of appraisers' fees.
Cappelli said the individual misappropriations ranged from as little as $44 to as much as $1,996, totaling $139,143.96 in all.

Hernandez "didn't have a lavish lifestyle," Cappelli said, and appeared to have been stealing the funds in part to pay for her husband's medical bills.
