A Glass Full of Hope

Recently, Coginchaug High School senior Kaylee Powers shared an inspiring story about her efforts to help a family in need by putting her passion and creativity into a life-changing project.

 “We are raising money to build a house for a poor family in the Dominican Republic,” said Kaylee. “I am painting and selling customized wine glasses.”

The project started for Kaylee when she made a personal connection on a mission trip. “Last summer I went on a trip through my church and met a little boy who was very sick,” said Kaylee.  

“We visited different villages every day, called Bateys. When I got off the bus at a village (Batey 50) this adorable little boy followed me around the whole day. Since he was sick, he hadn’t been able to sleep well in his bed, but he fell asleep on my shoulder and I just felt like I couldn’t leave until I did something for him and his family. We gave him money to go to the hospital, and he is now doing much better. Because they have nothing and basically live in a shack, I want to help build them a home.”

Kaylee has raised a little over $2,500, which is halfway to her goal of being able to give this family a home. If she is able to reach her goal, her plan is to surprise the family with the news at the end of June when her church will return to the Dominican with approximately 100 people to help build a hospital, houses, install water filtration, distribute food, run medical clinics and provide educational, social and recreational programs for children.  

Kaylee would love to help more families if she can continue to raise money by selling her wine glasses.

In addition, the Dominican Republic Mission Team will be hosting a dinner, concert and silent auction to raise money.  The event is on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Lyman Hall High School, in Wallingford. Dinner is from 5 pm – 6:30 pm and the show is at 7 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students, and Free for all kids 5 and under. Kaylee will be taking wine glass orders at the event.
