Banana Boat Sunscreen Recalled After Users Catch on Fire

The maker of Banana Boat sunscreen is recalling more than 20 types of its spray-on lotions after reports that several people have been burned after the lotion came in contact with an open flame.

In a press release, Energizer Holdings said the issues appears to be the result of the product delivery system, specifically the size of the spray valve opening on the affected products.

"The spray valve opening on the affected products dispenses more than is typical in the industry for continuous sun care sprays.  As a result, the product is taking longer to dry on the skin than is typical with other continuous sprays.  If a consumer comes into  contact with a flame or spark prior to complete drying of the product on the skin, there is a potential for the product to ignite," the release says.

There have been five reports of people suffering burns after using the sunscreen in the past year, according to a spokesman 

A list of the affected products, which includes 23 varities of UltraMist sunscreen have been ordered to be taken off store shelves. The list can be found here.

The products involved in the recall were distributed nationwide to wholesalers and retailers from January of 2010 through September 30, 2012. The company says 20 million units have been sold.
