Daily Five: School Budget Will Be Announced Tonight

Five things to know for Wednesday, February 20, 2013.

 

1. What's the Weather? Mostly sunny, with a high near 33. Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 17.

2. 2013-2014 School Budget District 13 Superintendent Susan Viccaro is scheduled to announce next year's budget proposal at tonight's Board of Education meeting at Strong School. The school board will meet each Wednesday in March to discuss and make adjustments to the budget as needed before it is presented to residents of Durham and Middlefield in April.

3. Boys Basketball Senior Night Four Blue Devils basketball players will be honored tonight when Coginchaug takes on Valley Regional in the team's final regular season game, seniors Michael Bongiorno, Jackson Doyle, Alex Kotrady and Jeff Grumm. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.

4. Local Students Named Ryken Scholars Xavier High School has announced the names of 15 eighth grade students who earned academic scholarships as part of the "Ryken Scholars" Program. The scholarships are provided to students who scored 95 or higher on the Entrance Exam.

Patrick Hocking of Middlefield, an 8th grader at Strong Middle School earned the the Alumni Honors Memorial Scholarship, a $1,000 scholarship given to students who score 95 percent.

Trevor Morris of Durham, an 8th grader at Independent Day School earned the Thomas Aiello Honors Memorial Scholarship, a $2,000 scholarship given to students who score 97 percent.

Congratulations to both students for their hard work!

5. The Registrars of Voters are conducting their annual update of all registered voters in Durham.  Every year, registrars review their records to ensure all registered citizens’ information is accurate and current.  If you have moved in town, changed your name from how you were originally registered, become a new citizen, or have not yet registered to vote, we encourage you to fill out a new voter registration card.  If you receive a notice from the Registrars, please fill it out and return it before May 1st if possible.  We would love to see 100% registration for all eligible citizens!
