Middlefield Voter Turnout Above State Average; Durham Below It

The final official numbers are in, showing how Durham and Middlefield stacked up against the rest of the state.

The statewide voter turnout for the 2013 municipal elections was 31.43 percent, according to figures released Wednesday by Secretary of the State Denise Merrill.

And, when looking at the final voting tallies, Middlefield beat out Durham this year by a wide margin for a higher turnout.

A total of 1,545 Middlefield residents head to the polls on Nov. 5, or 48.09 percent of the 3,213 registered voters. In Durham, just 1,187 of that town's total 5,074 — or 23.39 percent — of registered voters showed up at the polls.

Middlefield had a more notable first selectman race, while Durham's local elections were off-year races for smaller positions like Board of Finance.

By comparison, the voter turnout in Middlefield in the 2011 elections was 47.18 percent and in Durham — when there was a first selectman race — the turnout was 44.69 percent.
