Police: Drunk Teen Hits Mailboxes, Crashes SUV

A Middlefield teen was drunk when he lost control of an SUV, slammed into several mailboxes and then totaled the vehicle early Saturday morning, according to police.

Jake D'Agostino, 19, of 195 Baileyville Road, was arrested on Jan. 26 and charged with operation of a motor vehicle by a minor having an elevated blood alcohol content, misuse of plates, failure to drive right and failure to carry a driver's license.

According to a police report, at approximately 1 a.m., D'Agostino was traveling southbound on Algonquin Road in a 1997 Ford Explorer when he lost control of the vehicle and veered off the right side of the road.

The vehicle struck four mailboxes, as well as a flag pole and a shrub, according to police, before slamming into a tree.

The vehicle was totaled but D'Agostino was not injured, according to the report.

D'Agostino showed signs of intoxication at the scene and failed field sobriety tests, according to police. He was taken into custody and later submitted to an alcohol breath test at the Middletown Police Department, which was over the blood alcohol limit, the report says.

State law prohibits anyone under the age of 21 from driving with a BAC of .02 or more, although the results of the test were not released by police.

D'Agostino was released on $500 bond and is due in court Feb. 15.
