Prescription Discount Cards Coming to Middlefield Residents

Middlefield is now joining the ranks of Durham, Middletown, Wallingford, Haddam and dozens of other towns throughout the state to participate in the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities’ Prescripton Discount Card Program.


This means that in the coming months CCM will be issuing drug insurance cards to all residents in Middlefield, allowing residents to obtain discounts potentially as high as 45 percent on medications, CCM explained on its website. 

Once the cards are issued, which will likely happen in the coming months, residents will be able to save on medicine purchases with no attached fees or claims forms to fill out, First Selectman John Brayshaw said during the Board of Selectman meeting on Tuesday.

"This is great for people who are underinsured or don’t have prescription drug insurance," Brayshaw said. “So far, 102 towns and cities have signed up. We're Number 103."

The first selectman said there is no downside to this move, as it won't have any impact on the taxpayers. Middlefield is a member of CCM and pays dues annually to benefit from the statewide group's programs.

Citing some recent examples, Brayshaw said residents in the Town of Colchester had garnered roughly $65,000 in savings in four months after they started using the cards. He also said he spoke with officials in Durham who, while they didn't have hard data yet, said the savings were "significant."

After CCM contacted Middlefield, Brayshaw said he looked into the program and decided to sign off on participating in it. 

"To not to do it is silly," Brayshaw said. "It doesn’t cost the town anything and costs will be up to the drug stores."

The other two selectmen, David Burgess and Edward Bailey, indicated their approval to the plan as well.

The selectmen said the cards will be coming later and CCM will be promoting them by issuing posters to be set up around town.
