East Haven Music Teacher Named District Teacher of the Year

The teacher now has a shot at winning the title statewide by competing with other winners from towns across the state.

Michael Martino, third-, fourth- and fifth-grade music teacher at Tuttle school four days a week, kindergarten, first- and second-grade music teacher at Overbrook school and director of East Haven High School’s Yellow Jacket Marching Band, was selected to be the District Teacher of the year, the New Haven Register reported.

Teachers were nominated for the award by their peers, and Martino was selected after being one of three nominated for the award, the Register reported. Martino has been working in the district since 1985 alongside his wife, Denise, who is also a music teacher in the district.

This is East Haven’s first year participating in the Connecticut Teacher of the Year program, which started in 1952, the Register reported. Martino will now go on to compete for the statewide honor.
