East Haven Schools Modify Consolidation Plan

Modifications made to the plan addressed previous concerns from parents, residents and school officials.

Superintendent of Schools, Portia Bonner, presented a modified draft of the district’s proposed multimillion dollar consolidation plan Tuesday, which addressed concerns that had been previously brought up by board members back in May, the New Haven Register reported.

This newly proposed plan’s most drastic changes avoids sending eighth-graders to the high school, and instead will send preschool programs to the high school, including adding four preschool classrooms into the high school’s west wing, on the school’s lower level, and would also include a separate entrance, the Register reported.

Requested public forums, prompted in part by concerns raised by parents and residents, regarding the plan will be held on Sept. 1 at Ferrara, Sept. 17 at Momauguin, and Sept. 22 at Joseph Melillo, the Register reported. These forums will give the board and the superintendent an opportunity to gather more information regarding opinions and ideas for the plan from the community.

Changes to the final cost are still pending, and it isn’t clear if the new draft will increase or decrease the final plans cost, the Register reported.
