It was 8:10 a.m., when cops responded to 32 Old Foxon Road after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a man attacking a woman in the hallway of one of the apartment buildings, according to East Haven police spokesperson Capt. Joseph M. Murgo.
When police got inside the building, Murgo said they "encountered" Black "standing in the doorway of an apartment, in close proximity to a large knife located in the hallway."

"Black proceeded to retreat into the apartment and locked the door, barricading himself inside," Murgo said. "Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and attempted to gain entry into the apartment, but were initially unsuccessful. While this was occurring, additional officers went around to a side window, smashed it out and brought a young child to safety by pulling the child through the broken window. The child was not injured," Murgo said.
"While officers were attempting contact with Black, he unlocked the door, giving access to officers who then entered the apartment," Murgo said.
"Officers then attempted to take Black, who became combative, into custody," the police captain said. "Once Black was secure, officers discovered a female victim within the apartment suffering from multiple stab wounds."
The young woman was treated by East Haven Fire Department medics and rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital, "where she sadly succumbed to her injuries," Murgo said.
Black, who is charged with murder, risk of injury to a minor, assault on police, interfering with police, and interfering with an emergency call, is being held at East Haven Police headquarters on a $2 million bond. He'll be arraigned Wednesday in New Haven Superior Court.
The East Haven Police Investigative Services Division with the assistance of the Connecticut State Police Major Crimes Central District and New Haven State's Attorney’s Office have taken over the investigation.

East Haven Fire Department Chief Matthew Marcarelli shared on Facebook how hard firefighters fought for the woman's life.
"A tragic outcome without question, but excellent work by East Haven firefighters today in a Herculean effort to try to save this young woman," Marcarelli wrote.
Murgo said police "strongly encourage anyone in a domestic violence situation, or anyone concerned about a loved one, to reach out for help."
He added that the hearts of first responders, and the community, are breaking for the victim, her child and family.
"This incident has left a family grieving and a child facing a future shaped by unimaginable loss. Our hearts break for the victim’s family, friends, and those that were close to her," Murgo said. "If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available."
