4 Ellington/Somers-Area Nonprofits To Support This Holiday Season

Here's how to contribute locally on Giving Tuesday 2024.

ELLINGTON-SOMERS, CT — If you’re like many of your neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in and near Ellington and Somers.

Here is a sampling of nonprofit organizations to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:

  • Champs Place Food Pantry at Somers Congregational Church serves resident of Somers on Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon and 6-7 p.m.
  • Over the years, Ellington Community Scholarship Association has awarded countless dollars to Ellington students going on to college or technical and trade schools. Since 1995 alone, ECSA has awarded more than $1 million to Ellington students pursuing a post-secondary education.
  • The mission of the Somers Education Foundation is to preserve the community’s commitment to educational excellence in the Somers Public Schools, by providing funding for innovative projects and programs which enhance student learning.
  • The Nellie McKnight Museum, located at 70 Main Street in Ellington, is wholly owned and operated by the Ellington Historical Society. Funding for the operation of the museum comes from the society members’ dues, individual gifts and fundraising activities.
