ELLINGTON, CT — A popular north central Connecticut bakery Wednesday had this to say about Thanksgiving desserts.

"Sorry Grandma."

That's right, the owners of LuAnn's hung their heads and posted an emotional message on social media Wednesday.

"It has come to out attention that our Thanksgiving menu has led to several unintended consequences ... and for that we'd like to formally apologize," the message said.

It continued, "We're sorry that, after tasting our pies and breads, your friends will now assume your spent hours making Grandma's secret recipe."

The post is arguably one of the greatest promotions of all time. It served as a reminder that Thursday is the deadline to order dessert for next week.

LuAnne's has locations in Ellington and Stafford and another location is coming soon in Hartford.

"We regret that your family will now ask you to 'bring that dessert again' to every gathering — including the ones your weren't invited to. We apologize for the emotional fallout."

The responses varied from "you got me," to "oh crap" moments from people who forgot to place their orders.

Some were downright hysterical.

One post thanked the bakery for the laugh.

Said another customer, "Do you offer customized crust hole patterns so people think I actually made it? Because Lord knows if I show up with it in the box it comes in, I am blacklisted and shamed for life! So, naturally there is a transfer to a separate container to conceal the act of purchasing said pie, lest I be convicted of being a traitor! Asking for a friend of course."

LuAnn's can certainly get away with such shenanigans. After all, it has always been embedded in the region. Programs like the "drink of the month" club that benefit a different charity every month or our the "Pay it forward bulletin," where a friend buys a friend a favorite treat and leaves it on a bulletin board for him or her to find and redeem, are staples of the business.

LuAnn's also accepts donations through its online ordering service to help feed local healthcare providers. Drinks and pastries are delivered to healthcare workers at local hospitals who are working amid the coronavirus pandemic.
