Hidden Gems Of Hartford And Tolland Counties

ELLINGTON, CT — At the convergence of two country roads in Tolland County, we find a true Hidden Gem, an oasis known for its variety of comfort food and some pretty creative recipes. It's also an easy outpost for typical provisions.

Welcome to the Ellington Depot Deli and General Store at 1 Crystal Lake Road, where routes 140 and 30 meet.

In February, the Depot will be celebrating 42 years as a family run, small business offering breakfast and lunch and a general store. It features local products and vendors and it has an ice cream cottage in the summer.

The Depot has outdoor eating in the warmer months and a cozy dining room for the colder months.

The breakfast sandwiches and traditional deli sandwiches are among the best around, according to the locals.

But that's not all. Just this week, entrees included shepherd's pie, a loaded feta turkey burger, American chop suey and tacos on Tuesday.

Of course there's homemade meatloaf.

And the soups ... beef veggie ... butternut squash ... chicken bean ... and that's just this week's offerings.

Oh ... there's also plenty of Hosmer Mountain soda and it can be the go-to place for bread and milk and other everyday staples.
