Step Back in Time: Free Civil War Event at the Nellie McKnight Museum

A moving Civil War storytelling event honoring Ellington's forgotten soldiers, complete with campfire refreshments and historic atmosphere.

The Ellington Historical Society invites the public to a powerful and immersive evening of history on Friday, July 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the Nellie McKnight Museum, 70 Main Street, Ellington. (Rain date Saturday July 19th) In partnership with the New England Civil War Museum, this free event tells the gripping story of 35 young men from Ellington who found themselves deep in the Louisiana bayou during the Battle of Irish Bend on April 14, 1863—their first major encounter of the Civil War.

Titled “Ellington Blood on the Louisiana Bayou,” the program brings the past to life through vivid storytelling, authentic letters, and rare historical insights that reveal the bravery, fear, and sacrifice of local soldiers far from home. Guests will be transported back in time as historical interpreters recreate the atmosphere of a Civil War encampment.

The experience is enhanced by The Rusty Canteen, which will be serving food and refreshments throughout the evening, and a campfire on the museum grounds, adding ambiance to this moving tribute to Ellington’s Civil War history.
