Unprovoked Attack Sends Correction Officer To Hospital, Officials Say
The Department of Corrections says it's reviewing department policies after an officer was choked and punched.
SOMERS, CT — A Correction Officer was injured Monday afternoon after an incarcerated individual launched an unprovoked attack inside the Osborn Correctional Institution, according to a release from the state Department of Correction.
The incident happened around 3:20 p.m. on December 1st while staff were conducting a security check in one area of the facility. Without warning, the incarcerated individual began choking and punching the officer in the face, officials said.
Additional staff responded quickly and restrained the individual, who was then transferred to the Restrictive Housing Unit at the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution. The injured officer was taken to an outside hospital for evaluation, treated, and later released.

“Violence against Department of Correction staff is unacceptable,” Commissioner Angel Quiros said in a statement. “Anyone who makes the ill-advised decision to assault a Correction Officer will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Quiros added that the agency will review the incident and adjust policies if needed “to prevent an incident like this from happening again,” noting that his thoughts are with the injured officer and her family.
