3,000 Enfield Residents To Lose Food Aid, Food Drive This Weekend Aims To Help

The food drive, hosted by a local lawmaker and an Enfield nonprofit, is in response to the federal government eliminating food assistance.

ENFIELD, CT — With federal food assistance about to disappear this Saturday, one Enfield lawmaker and a local nonprofit are hosting an "urgent" food drive to stock Enfield's food bank that same day.

The federal government shutdown means that SNAP food benefits will disappear on Nov. 1, leaving many low-income recipients without a steady means to purchase food.

State Rep. John Santanella, D-Enfield, and Enfield Food Shelf, Inc., on Saturday, Nov. 1, are hosting an "urgent food drive to support Enfield families who will be left without Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits."

It will take place Saturday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Enfield Food Shelf, Inc., 786 Enfield St.

The food drive will help Enfield Food Shelf stock its shelves, enabling it to continue providing food to those in need.

More than 3,000 Enfield residents rely on SNAP, including children and senior citizens, according to Santanella's office.

Some of the items most needed are canned tuna, soup, rice, cereal, peanut butter and jelly, dry pasta, and other non-perishable food items.

For those unable to come to the food drive in person, monetary donations can be made to the State Representative John Santanella Food Drive: https://secure.qgiv.com/for/repjohnsantanellafooddrive.
