Enfield Civic Group Supports Local Literacy Initiative
The nonprofit recently awarded a sizable donation to a project aimed at recognizing young readers in Enfield.

ENFIELD, CT — An Enfield-based philanthropic organization recently donated grant funds to an Enfield literacy initiative.
100 Women Who Care - North Central Connecticut recently donated $3,800 to First Readers Association of Enfield, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, based in Enfield.

First Readers is a unique town-wide program that recognizes and celebrates a key milestone in learning — becoming a reader.
Once a child has been certified by his or her teacher as being able to read one of a selection of books fluently for the first time, that child’s accomplishment is acknowledged by celebrating with the Enfield Community.

Children receive recognition at a special town ceremony where they receive a First Readers t-shirt, medal, and certificate of accomplishment by town or school officials.
Any child in grades K to 8 who attends school or resides in Enfield is eligible to participate.
Charlotte Riley, President of First Readers Association of Enfield, accepted the donation.
“First Readers Association of Enfield would like to express its sincere gratitude to 100
Women Who Care for this amazing donation, which will allow us to continue to encourage,
celebrate, and instill a lifelong love of reading in our youngest learners," she said. "From all of us at First Readers, thank you so very much."
100 Women Who Care – North Central CT is a philanthropic organization with over 600 chapters throughout the world, including in Enfield
The group meets four times a year to select a charity to receive a contribution.
Its next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 21. New members are welcome.
