1. The Essex Garden Club has announced that applications are now being accepted for 2023 college scholarships. Eligible applicants include high school seniors and undergraduate or graduate college students who are residents of Centerbrook, Essex or Ivoryton and are pursuing studies related to the environment in an accredited two-year or four-year college program. Prior year recipients are also encouraged to apply. Fields of study may include Agriculture, Conservation Biology, Ecology, Earth and Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Humanities, Environmental Justice, Environmental Law and Public Policy, Environmental Toxicology, Forestry, Geology, Horticulture, Renewable Energy or Urban Ecology. Closely related subjects may also apply including Land Conservation, Landscape Design and Nursery Management. Application forms and further details are available at the Essex Garden Club and at the Essex and Ivoryton libraries. The deadline for receipt of completed applications is April 21, 2023. 2. A competitive grant in the amount of $12,000 has been awarded to the Chester Land Trust (CLT) from the Community Foundation of Middlesex County (CFMC) Mary Janvrin and Natalie Janvrin Wiggins Fund for Birds, Other Animals and Nature. According to a press release from the Trust, "Funds will be used to protect and further develop the rich natural habitat for birds and other wildlife in areas surrounding Chester Creek from destruction due to Japanese knotweed and other invasive plants."
