Here are the top three stories today in Essex-Chester-Deep River:
- Reportedly, Nicholas Klomp, 22, of Essex, was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs, as well as two counts of evading responsibility and motor vehicle offenses, state police said after he had been involved in two crashes on I-691 in the Meriden area around 8:50 p.m. Thursday, police said in a release. According to the CT Insider, "Troopers with Troop I in Bethany were notified that a gray Saturn sedan had been involved in two crashes on I-691 in the Meriden. Troopers working in a nearby highway construction zone responded to the area and located a Saturn sedan matching the description of the evading vehicle" on I-691 at the Exit 12 off-ramp, state police said. State police said the driver, identified as Nicholas Klomp, 22, of Essex, showed signs of being intoxicated and failed field sobriety tests. (CT Insider)
- The Deep River Public Library is requesting $119,850 in funds from the Town of Deep River's American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). According to zip06, "a six-part proposal from the Deep River Public Library includes possible new infrastructural additions to the building’s indoor and outdoor study spaces, with the hopes to better serve library patrons according to their needs. It includes improvements and additions including expanding learning opportunities for the young adult demographic, new workspaces to [be] suited for individual needs, and easier interaction accessibility between library staff and visitors and materials for study. Current programs at the library that proved popular during quarantine, including chess instruction and online cooking classes, are also looking to be extended, alongside the introduction of new young adult programming. Program extension costs are estimated to be $5,850, according to the proposal. Another part of the proposal includes at a $3,500 allocation of ARPA funds for an increase in digital materials as part of the Library’s online circulation system." (zip06)
- The countdown has begun for this year's Ivoryton Village Pumpkin Festival which will take place October 22. Here is a list of some new things that will added to this year's event and some favorite mainstays that will return as part of the festive event: "NEW- Ivoryton Village Pumpkin Festival costume parade, selfie station at the Brickside Pizza Patio, special performance by Mulkerin School of Irish Dance, book signing with local author Frank Larson III. Returning: The Bushy Hill Nature Center pumpkin carving party, Ivoryton Library Association Haunted Library and The Pumpkin Chase and Festival, We are The Federation live band, face painting with The Painted Smile, Essex, CT Lions Club with free hotdogs, Allegra Farm with wagon rides, Community Foundation of Middlesex County cookie decorating, JACK-O-LANTERN STROLL sponsored by Ivoryton Village Alliance and Essex Police Union, Yard Games at Brickside Pizza Patio."
