- Siobhan McAndrew and Hope Proctor are chairing Hike for Haiti, sponsored by Sister Cities Essex Haiti (SCEH) on Sunday, October 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The hike will be held at Cross Lots in Essex, which is one of the Essex Land Trust's properties. According to zip06.com, "there will be signs to show how long a participant would need to hike the 1.75-mile Cross Lots trail to get to different locations if they were residents in the Haitian community. Siobhan’s interest in Haiti grew as she learned more about the country’s bleak economic situation. According to World Bank statistics, Haiti is the poorest country in the Caribbean region and one of the poorest countries in the world. The World Bank’s report added that on the United Nations Human Development Index, a measure of the standard of living, Haiti ranked 170 out of 189 countries in 2020." - According to Fire Engineering, "Whelen Engineering recently announced that nominations are open for its 2022 Everyday Champion award. Each year, Whelen’s Everyday Champion program celebrates and recognizes outstanding emergency service departments, individuals or groups by honoring demonstrations of bravery and courage during an act of exceptional valor or tireless efforts in making a community a better or safer place to live. “We always look forward to this time of year,” said Peter Tiezzi, general manager of Motorsports and project manager at Whelen and retired 35-year veteran of the Chester Hose Company in Chester, Connecticut. “Protecting and supporting first responders is central to everything we do, and it’s an honor for us to bring recognition to the men and women who sacrifice themselves in service to others,” said Tiezzi. Whelen encourages members of the public to nominate someone from their community for the 2022 Whelen Everyday Champion award by going to https://www.whelen.com/everydaychampion/ and filling out a brief submission form. Nominations must be received by Friday, October 28 for this year’s consideration." (Fire Engineering)
