Here are the top three stories in Essex-Chester-Deep River today:

  1. Tragedy has struck the state of Connecticut! Two police offers were shot and killed and a third was seriously injured after responding to a domestic incident Wednesday night in the town of Bristol. According to an article written by Patch Staff Brian McCready, "in a news conference Thursday morning, state police said three Bristol police officers responded at 10:29 p.m. to 310 Redstone Hill Road for a 911 call involving two siblings. When the officers arrived, shots were fired and one officer was killed, while two others were taken to Bristol Hospital. A second officer died at the hospital, while a third officer underwent surgery and is recovering from a "severe" gunshot wound, law enforcement officials said. One suspect was fatally shot, while a second suspect was shot and is currently at a hospital, police said. His condition is unknown. State police said this is an "isolated incident" and there is no threat to the community. The identities of the two suspects have not yet been released. Bristol Police Chief Brian Gould said the two officers shot and killed are Sgt. Dustin Demonte, 35, who is a school resource officer and Officer Alex Hamzy, 34. Officer Alec Iurato, 26, who was hired in 2018, was seriously injured in the shooting. Gould said the officers are all "heroes" and "words cannot express the sadness and grief that brings me before you this morning." (Patch)

According to a press release from the Ivoryton Playhouse, "the Gala will include a special evening of theatre, food, music and revelry to benefit Ivoryton Playhouse on Sunday, October 23rd at 3 p.m. The fundraiser will begin with a performance of THE GREAT GATSBY inside the theatre at 3 p.m., followed by music, food and prohibition style beverages in a celebration of excess spilling out under our beautifully decorated tent. Guests of The Great Gatsby Gala are encouraged to revel the night away in their Gatsby, mobster and flapper-inspired finery while dancing commences, champagne flows and delightful 20s style food is served. Tickets for the fundraiser are $150 each. This special event is to help raise funds for a new AC and ventilation system.   3. The Valley Regional Field Hockey Team is doing well! According to zip06.com, "the Valley Regional field hockey team had three games on last week’s slate and prevailed in all three of those contests to boost its record to 6-2-1 this season. The Warriors scored a win over Morgan before defeating Westbrook-Old Lyme and Waterford in the games last week. Valley began last week by earning a 3-2 road win over Morgan in Clinton on Oct. 3.” Way to go girls! (Zip06.com)
