Here are the top three stories in Essex-Chester-Deep River today:
- Several new laws in Connecticut went into effect on Oct. 1 including but not limited to: firearm background check failure notification. The law requires the chief of police, or similar officials, to be notified if a resident of their town fails a criminal background check while attempting to purchase a firearm. And, Online dating companies must give Connecticut users awareness notifications, such as whether they conduct criminal background screenings. The law also created a grant program to prevent online abuse and provide educational opportunities on how to identify, report and avoid online abuse. For the list of laws go to Patch. (Patch)
- If you've been looking to add a four-legged ball of love and affection to your life, start with these Essex-Chester-Deep River area shelters for a pet up for adoption. About 6.5 million pets and other companion animals are given to adoption facilities each year nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. Shelters often look after other animals in search of a permanent home as well, including pigs, birds and even horses. However, only half of all shelter animals — about 3.2 million — are adopted each year, according to ASPCA data. This means millions of animals — some right here in the Essex-Chester-Deep River area — are still waiting for their forever homes. (Essex-Chester-Deep River Patch)
- According to a Facebook post on the Essex Library page, "the Essex Fire Engine Company No. 1 is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) and the Essex Library—to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week TM (FPW), October 9-15. This year’s FPW campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape TM,” works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires. The Essex Fire Engine Company No. 1 will share key home fire escape planning tips and encourages all residents to embrace the 2022 Fire Prevention Week theme. “Today’s homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA.The Essex Library presents 100 Years Of Fire Safety on Thursday, October 13th at 7 p.m. on Zoom. Registration is required. Zoom registration link: http://ow.ly/Wlof50KXtwS." (Essex Library via Facebook)

- Ivoryton Library Association: "Come check out our wonderful titles." (Ivoryton Library Association via Facebook)
- Essex Library: "The Friends Of The Essex Library annual Fall Book Sale is right around the corner! Join us at the library on Saturday, October 15, from 10-4, and on Monday, October 17, from 10-4 to pick up some of your favorites." (Essex Library via Facebook)
- Katherine Hilliar, Neighbor: "Let Essex Sensibility guide the character of the town, not the loudest mouths. Permit cannabis business in Essex, Centerbrook and Ivoryton the Essex Planning and Zoning commission has a proposal before it that would restrict any cannabis-related business from operating in the town. The proposal includes any sale of medical and recreational cannabis as well as any cultivation of the plant within town limits. The State of Connecticut has legalized the medical and recreational sale and use of cannabis as well as cultivation. This proposal would place an undue burden on those who benefit from the cannabis plant for their health and wellbeing. If the proposal passes, those in need will be forced to travel distances to seek relief, making treatment for those most vulnerable in our community out of reach." (Patch Neighbor Posts)
