Here are the top four stories today in Essex-Chester-Deep River:

  1. Home Sprinkler Safety Tip No. 1 from the Essex Fire Company. "Did you know, according to the Essex Fire Company, installing sprinklers and smoke alarms in your home increases your chance of surviving a fire by more than 82 percent? Safer fire service: The risk to firefighters is much less. Sprinklers reduce the heat, flame and smoke from a fire. Fast response: Home fire sprinklers are more sensitive to heat than those found in businesses or industrial buildings. This means the fire will be detected much sooner. Can blend with your home decor: You can buy home fire sprinklers in different colors. Some can be installed flush with the ceiling, so you will hardly notice they are there. Reliable: Home fire sprinklers only spray when the temperature in the room rises quickly. The sprinkler above the fire is the only one that sprays. Investment protection: Sprinklers can prevent devastating home damage by putting out flames quickly. Sprinklers can limit the damage caused by smoke and fire. They are less damaging than water damage caused by firefighting hose lines. Check out the options available for your home and stay safe!" (Essex Fire Engine Co. #1 via Facebook)
  2. There are a plethora of things to do in the Nutmeg State this first official weekend of fall, including the Durahm Fair, a handful of beer festivals, some 5k's and a walk. Have fun whatever you do! Here is a list of more than 25 things to do! (CT Insider)
  3. The Essex Veteran’s Memorial Hall (EVMH) will be holding its annual Pig and Beef Roast Fundraiser Saturday, September 24 at the club located at 3 Westbrook Road from 2 to 6 p.m. Admission is $30 for adults and $20 for children under the age of 12. The feast will include hors d’oeuvres, the main course and a variety of desserts. In addition to a bevy of delicious food there will also be live music and a raffle. Hope to see you there! (Essex Veterans Memorial Hall via Facebook)
  4. Don't forget to get your walking shoes on and come out to support neurodiversity by being part of a 5K walk which will be held by the non-profit, A Little Compassion (ALC), on October 1. "The Compassion Walk, which begins at Deep River Elementary School at 9 a.m., will be an adaptable route based on individual walker’s stamina, interest and abilities, according to ALC Executive Director Jane Moen in a Zip06 article. “There are two different cutoffs on the route, one that takes off almost a mile and another that takes off another mile. Instead of almost three miles, folks can cut it down to two and a half miles, or to two miles,” said Moen. “We wanted the walk to be fully inclusive and open to everybody and every ability." The event, the first of its kind by ALC, is meant for people from all walks of life, with the hopes of reaching the greatest number of people to support ALC’s mission in supporting and honoring neurodiverse individuals and their integral message of acceptance and inclusion, according to Moen. Registration is available on the website alittlecompassion.org, with participation for children between the ages of 4 to 12 at $15 per person, and $20 for all at age 13 and up. The same amount will be for participation in the virtual walk. All registration fees will be donations towards ALC. (Zip06)
