Fairfield Community Garden Gains National Recognition

Community garden selected as one of the country's most prestigious gardens.

Fairfield’s Community Garden garnered national recognition last week when it was named one of North America’s most prestigious gardens.

The Demonstration and Display Garden, which is located at Drew Park on Warde Terrace in Fairfield, was selected in a group of prestigious public gardens to be one of the All-America Selections Display Gardens.

Drew Park Demonstration and Display Garden joins a select group of 183 All-America Selections Display Gardens in North America and is the first of its kind in Connecticut.

By participating, Drew Park Demonstration and Display Garden will be able to display the flowers and plants with excellent garden performance that have been declared AAS Winners in the past five years, according to First Selectman Michael Tetreau.

“The town is very proud that our community garden is the only one in the state to receive this prestigious honor,” he said. “I thank everyone who has been involved in this endeavor from its inception in 1995 to now and I encourage the public to visit these beautiful gardens.”

This year, Fairfield’s Drew Park Demonstration and Display Garden partnered with Fairfield Woods Branch Library to grow heirloom seeds for the Library's Seed-to-Seed collection and to provide the “Seed to Plate” vegetable garden education program to the community.  Produce from these gardening activities is donated to local food pantries, according to Tetreau.
