Fairfield Democrats Honor John Mitola With 2024 John J. Sullivan Award

The evening was highlighted by remarks from special guest speakers, including U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal.

FAIRFIELD, CT — On Sunday, September 22nd, Democratic leaders and members of the community gathered in the Fairchild Room of Vazzy’s at Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course to honor John Mitola as the 2024 recipient of the prestigious John J. Sullivan Public Service Award. The Sullivan Award, named for the Fairfield First Selectman admired by both parties for his exemplary leadership from 1959 to 1983, is given annually to a Democrat who has served the Party and the Fairfield community through distinguished service.

John Mitola, a Fairfield native, was recognized for his extensive service, including a decade on the Board of Finance (currently serving as Vice Chair), his contributions to the Fairfield Board of Education (2005–2011), and his leadership on the Fairfield Charter Revision Commission and school building committees. An attorney specializing in municipal and labor law, John has also served the town through numerous other volunteer roles, including with the Fairfield National Little League and multiple PTA boards.

The evening was highlighted by remarks from special guest speakers, including U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, Fairfield First Selectman Bill Gerber, State Representatives Cristin McCarthy Vahey, Jennifer Leeper, and Sarah Keitt, as well as Probate Judge candidate Kathy Caulfield. Fairfield DTC Chair Steven Sheinberg served as the evening’s dynamic emcee, lauding Mitola’s even-keeled nature, leadership, and dedication to Fairfield.

Senator Blumenthal, before presenting Mitola with an official citation, noted that his service embodies the spirit of public commitment that the Sullivan Award celebrates and that his contributions have made a lasting impact on Fairfield.

In his acceptance speech, Mitola expressed gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the importance of community involvement.

The Fairfield Democratic Town Committee (DTC) is the local arm of the Connecticut Democratic Party, overseeing all Democratic Party activities in the Town of Fairfield, Connecticut.
