Fairfield RTM Member Melissa Longo Called Out For Rhetoric After Charlie Kirk Killing
In a statement to Patch, the District 1 representative is unapologetic about the remarks.
FAIRFIELD, CT — Fairfield Representative Town Meeting member Melissa Longo, clearly heartbroken and angered by the killing of conservative advocate Charlie Kirk, wrote remarks condemning Democrats for the incident, and her sentiments have gotten her into a spot of trouble.
Kirk, 31, was shot and killed on Wednesday during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University, and a suspect in the murder remained at-large on Thursday.
Leaders in Connecticut condemned the killing, as did the Fairfield Democratic Town Committee in a Facebook post.

In reference to the incident, Longo wrote the following on her Facebook page, accompanied by a picture of Kirk:
"F*** the left. Conservatives are only more emboldened than we are afraid of being silenced. We will carry Charlie message to our young adults who desperately need to understand that there are 2 genders, America is one nation created under GOD, and protecting our country is lawful. F*** off if you feel any differently, we are done playing with you."

Longo also replied to the DTC's Facebook post with the following:
"Democrats are the problem. All of you are faithless, God hating evil, vile people. Yes thoughts and prayers are necessary because a 31yr old father of 2 was just assassinated. And his wife and family need the support. For years, your party has done everything to spew violence, riot, as if that is the answer, because you are the party of tolerance and acceptance. Accept the 2nd amendment. Accept the 1st amendment and accept the fact that Charlie Kirk was a kind man, a father who had deep faith in God. Accept that those who believe otherwise are pure evil. You are the problem. Democrats are killing this town, this state and trying (unsuccessfully) to kill our republic"
On Thursday, both the DTC and Fairfield Republican Town Committee posted statements on Patch calling out Longo for the remarks.
"Representative Longo’s comments were made in her personal capacity and in no way represent the Fairfield RTC or our endorsed candidates," the Republican group wrote. "We remain committed to leading with respect, working across political differences, and ensuring Fairfield’s government reflects the best of our community."
The Fairfield DTC's statement called on Longo to resign. "This is not the language of a leader. This is not the behavior of someone fit to represent Fairfield residents — Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated voters alike. It is the language of division, hatred, and extremism. Fairfield deserves better."
Patch reached out to Longo for comment, and she issued the following statement:
"I understand the RTC's statement, leadership and I discussed my post earlier," Longo wrote. "I have proudly served my constituents, and look forward to continuing to do so."
She followed up the statement with a quote from Kirk:
"Commit yourself to a life of courage. If people aren't courageous, you don't have honesty, you don't have justice and you don't have beauty, you don't have wonder. Courage is doing the right thing when you don't know how it's going to work out Courageous committing yourself to the right course of action, Regardless of the cost associated to it."
