The following press release was submitted by the Fairfield Wildcats Youth Football program.

Fairfield Wildcats edge Darien 6-0 in season opener

The Fairfield Wildcats 8th grade team opened the season on Sunday, notching a tight 6-0 win against Darien Blue.  The beautiful late summer weather belied the tension on the field, as both teams’ mighty defenses kept the game scoreless through three quarters.

With time running out in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats offense struck.  Timmy Jacobi plowed his way down the field for an impressive run that gave Fairfield excellent field position deep in Darien’s territory.  This was immediately followed by the line clearing a lane for Jack Curtis to bulldoze his way into the end zone.  It was a thrilling finish to a hard-fought battle between these two tough teams.

Opening the scoring for the season was Brain Howell who turned in a spectacular performance on both sides of the ball.  Dylan Beck caught a pass from quarterback David Summers for a two-point conversion and Will Richards converted on a two-pointer as well. Aidan Kilgallon, Justin Coudert and Jesse Lawson also helped the Wildcats with strong performances on both sides of the ball.

Griffin Forberg and Sean Fuller stayed on the field for a good part of the game, and newcomers Wyatt Garrity and Christian Peterson made early contributions to Sunday’s success.

The Wildcats will travel to Wilton for a Saturday night contest under the lights next weekend.

6th grade drops opener to Wilton

The 6th grade Wildcats dropped their season opener at Wilton on Sunday 21-0.  Despite giving up some long scores, the defense was stout at times with Evan Rose and Ryan Lawrence flying into the backfield to record numerous tackles for loss, along with big hits in the middle by Linebacker Griffin Gallati.

On offense, the Wildcat’s quarterback Quinn Pavoz connected with speedy wideout Alex Farkas for a number of nice first down pass plays in the second half, but it was not enough. After a bye week, the 6th graders return to action Sept.22 at Westport North.

5th grade shutout Westport

The Wildcats 5th grade team began the season well on Saturday, taking down Westport 14-0.

Running-back Lorenzo Cooper ran for over 100 yards and scored two touchdowns behind great blocking by Guard Jack McKenna and Center James Cullinan.  Quarterback Andrew Conklin converted a two point conversion with a pass to Tight End Dylan Igram. Defensively the team was led by Linebackers Ryan McIntosh and Jack Gremses.  Cornerback Aiden Casey made some great open field tackles.

Fairfield Wildcats home opener will be against Wilton this Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Ludlow Field.

4th grade (blue) picks up win against Westport

The Wildcats 4th grade (blue) opened the season at PJ Romano field in Westport with an impressive 27-6 victory over the Westport Wreckers.

The Wildcat offense wasted no time, needing just two plays for Ryan O’Connell to scamper 55 yards for a touchdown.

On the third play of the next series Tyler Hibbard put the Wildcats up by 14 points with a 50 yard run right up the gut of the Wrecker defense for his first of two scores in the game.

A offensive line plaed a crucial role in the victory with great blocking. Joey Delia, Ryan Ginley, Luke Lesizza, Cooper Daily, Grady Gollier, Tyler Palumbo and Jake Neff opened huge holes throughout the game allowing the for running backs to run all over the field.

A stingy defense, backed by a tough defensive-line play and great work by the Wildcat linebackers gave the Wildcats the ability to contain the Wrecker running backs.

Other strong performances included Ronan O’Donnell with a strong 5 yard TD run and smothering middle LB play, Zach Hathaway scoring a PAT and playing very well at outside LB, great QB and OLB play by John Moore who scored a PAT on a QB bootleg and Lucca Iononne.
