Letter: 'Way to Go Fairfield'

Letter writer Jay Wolk states that residents and local and state leaders have pushed partisanship aside for gun and GMO labeling legislation.

Dear Editor,

I am really grateful for the opportunity to live in Fairfield and even more proud of all the local leaders making a difference not just in our town but in the state this year.  Two local moms, spurred by the tragedy of Dec. 14, formed the March for Change and helped build the momentum that encouraged our legislature to pass sweeping gun safety legislation. All of our local state representatives joined together to vote for the new laws showing not only courage but bi-partisan willingness to work together. Connecticut’s gun laws have already become the standard for quality, thoughtful legislative change and will likely spur other states to take action.

Most recently, Fairfield’s own Tara Cook-Littman led a locally grown statewide effort to see our state require labeling of Genetically Modified Organisms found in our food. I was proud to join forces with Tara, along with Michael Herley, Mark Patten, Bill Domeika and Fairfield RTM moderator Jeff Steele, all who are local Representative Town Meeting members who worked together to sponsor a Fairfield resolution to support the GMO labeling cause.

Even more impressive, was joining the rally in Hartford as citizens from all over the state came together to fight for GMO labeling. Our local legislators Rep. Kim Fawcett, Brenda Kupchick, Tony Hwang and Senator John McKinney left partisanship aside and championed the GMO bill, participating in negotiations on the legislation until the middle of the night and ultimately guaranteeing that the legislation passed by both houses. Now we sit by and eagerly wait for other states to join our call to action.

Working together we sparked change. Local Fairfield leaders, reaching out and organizing, regardless of political party are making a difference and I am really proud to have had the opportunity to work alongside of them this year. Way to go Fairfield.

Sincerely,

Jay Wolk
