New Canaan Softball Edges Fairfield Ludlowe Out of FCIAC Playoffs

The Fairfield Ludlowe Falcons may have outhit the New Canaan High School Rams, but one hit was all it took for the Rams to edge out the Falcons in Tuesday's FCIAC softball semifinals.

The game began as a pitchers' duel in the afternoon heat Sacred Heart University's Pioneer Field. It was scoreless until the the bottom of the sixth, when the Rams' Rachel Kortman got a hit that sent Claire Conley home.

"It's exciting," Rams coach Danielle Simoneau said of the 1-0 game.

Both Kortman and Conley were bench players Tuesday, she said, but they stepped up to advance the Rams to Thursday's finals.

Each team was led by a strong pitching effort. For the Rams, it was Ali Reilly. For the Falcons, it was Brigette Anderson.

"She's not fazed by anything," Coach Tony Samuelian said. "She came through. She doesn't get rattled."

Anderson allowed just three weak singles. The game was lost on an error.

"We outhit them 5-3," Samuelian said.

The Falcons will "regroup and come back for states," Samuelian said of the upcoming CIAC playoffs.

"We are building momentum...we came out swinging in our last three games," Samuelian said.
