Fairfield Playground to Honor Sandy Hook Victim

Construction will begin this week on a new Fairfield playground in memory of one of the 20 children killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. 

Fairfield firefighters and local volunteers will partner with the ‘Sandy Ground Project: Where Angels Play’ at Penfield Pavilion Beach on September 13 to build a brand new play area for local children.

The Fairfield site will celebrate the life of Jessica Rekos and will reflect her favorite colors and her love of horses and Orca whales, according to a release from the Fairfield Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation. Jessica’s mother, Krista, was a graduate of Fairfield University and has close ties to the community.

The playground is the ninth of 26 planned playgrounds designed for coastal communities damaged by Super Storm Sandy throughout the tri-state area, and in honor of the 26 victims of the Newtown shooting.

Playgrounds have already been completed in Westport, Ansonia and Stratford, as well as five locations in New Jersey. A ribbon cutting ceremony for the Penfield Beach location is scheduled for September 14 at 6 p.m., according to the release.
