"Bank employees contacted the account holder, who confirmed they had not written the check and reported that their checkbook had previously gone missing," Fairfield Police Sgt. Jenna Wellington told Patch. "The account holder also noted prior unauthorized attempts to cash other checks from the same book."

Wellington offered some tips to help avoid falling victim to a similar situation.
"We want to remind the public to regularly review bank statements and report any suspicious activity immediately," she said. "If your checks are lost or stolen, notify your bank right away and consider placing a stop payment on affected check numbers. Quick action can prevent further fraudulent activity and assist in criminal investigations."
