Rebutting "Fairfield Needs A First Selectman..."

Ignore the spin; decide for yourself

Having recently read the comments made by one Timothy Herbst, I find it appropriate to make a few of my own remarks.

First off, Mr. Herbst claims to be a lifelong Republican. That’s great, but has he ever actually lived in Fairfield?

Last I heard, Herbst was the first selectman in Trumbull, where he lost a bid for re-election. I should note that during that re-election campaign, he endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton rather than the party nominee, now-president Donald Trump. So much for party loyalty.

Second, let’s talk about Tony Hwang’s leadership qualities.

I have worked with Senator Hwang as a volunteer on several campaigns. In all of that time, he has been nothing but gracious to me.

He’s held himself up as a class act, expressing appreciation and respect for my efforts; even when such efforts included spraining my ankle on the deck of his house.

And contrary to Mr. Herbst’s statements, Mr. Hwang has been a consistent fighter for Fairfielders.

In regards to UI, he stood shoulder-to-shoulder (along with officials from Bridgeport) against the utility's wiring proposal, which would’ve decimated property and environmental rights across the region.

In addition, Hwang has spoken up concerning good jobs, autism care/recognition, and many other important issues. Maybe my memory fails me, but I don’t recall First Selectman Herbst ever doing the same.

On a personal note to Mr. Herbst; I get it, I really do. These statements are about publicity, and keeping your name in the public eye. Often, that’s the way politics has to go. If you don’t get your name in the papers, people forget about you; I understand that.

Be that as it may, a certain Republican president once said to “never speak ill of a fellow Republican”.

The fact that Mr. Herbst is “speaking ill” (and evidently, for his own optical purposes) leads me to believe that either he has never heard this saying, or that the Democrats are giving him something for his trouble. One wonders which it is.

Please stop with the "dog-and-pony show", Mr. Herbst. Other than the Democratic Party, it’s not working for anyone’s benefit.

That said, I urge Fairfielders to ignore the constant spin attempts put forward by the opposition; outsiders who have never lived in town, and thus don’t know the first thing about it.

Whomever your ballot is eventually cast for, make up your own mind, and vote your conscience at the polls.
