FARMINGTON, CT — Farmington voters gave a resounding thumbs up to town/education spending next year, as well as a new HVAC system/roof at one site and a new HVAC system at another.

The biggest question on Thursday's referendum ballot was a $136.77 million town/school spending package for the next fiscal year.

On that front, voters said "yes" to the budget 593-392, a percentage breakdown of 60 percent "yes" to 40 percent "no."

For a home assessed at $300,000 (slightly less than the average assessment in Farmington), the new budget would mean an additional $351 in property taxes for that homeowner.

In all, taxes will increase by 4.61 percent, according to the latest figures from the town.

Included in the new budget are:

• $83.24 million to operate the Farmington School System — a 4.65 percent increase.

• $36.44 million for town operations — a 4.05 percent increase.

• Debt service is at $13.72 million — a 20.04 percent hike.

• Capital improvement items at $3.017 million — a 32.15 percent increase (the largest percentage hike in the budget.)

HVAC/Roof Projects

In addition to the town/school budget, voters easily approved two separate projects to improve key town facilities.

Voters said "yes" — 610-374 — to spend $1 million for a new HVAC system at the town's highway and grounds department garage.

In addition, voters approved, by a 637-347 vote, spending $2.65 million for a new HVAC system and roof at the town's community/senior center.
