HS Students Compete In Annual Torrington History Day Regional Contest

Over 300 high school students participated in the annual Torrington History Day Regional Contest in hopes of advancing to the nationals.

From Torrington HS: This past Saturday at Torrington High School over 300 middle and high school students competed at the annual Torrington History Day Regional Contest where volunteers judged student projects to see who would move on to the Connecticut History Day Contest this April at Central Connecticut State University. Students from Irving A. Robbins Middle School in Farmington performed well in the junior division categories and West Hartford resident Mia Porcello, last year’s National Winner and a student at St. Timothy Middle School, won first place in the Junior Individual Exhibit category. Full results from the contest can be found here. Torrington Mayor Elinor Carbone and State Representatives Michelle Cook and Brian Ohler handed out awards to students.

The teams of judges – consisting of local educators, historians, and history lovers - assessed original student exhibits, performances, documentaries, websites and papers and sent the top three projects from each category to the Connecticut History Day Contest where they will compete against winners from the state’s five other regional contests. The competitors based their projects on this year’s National History Day® (NHD) theme Taking a Stand in History. Participants can work alone or in groups in one of the five History Day categories.

The Torrington Regional Contest is supported by the Upper Housatonic Valley National Heritage Area and financial support is provided by the Northwestern Connecticut Community Foundation.
