Major Farmington Park Expansion Won't Be Ready This Summer: Town

While a splash pad will not be open this summer at the park, new pickleball courts could be ready for use by fall.

FARMINGTON, CT — Major additions at a local park are progressing nicely, town officials said recently, but they won't be ready for use this summer.

All summer long, the Westwood Recreation Complex, home to the Westwoods Golf Course, 14 Westwoods Drive, has been a major construction site as crews work to install a splash pad, pickleball courts, new facility bathrooms, and various other infrastructure/drainage projects on site.

The project is being funded by a $500,000 state Small Town Economic Assistance Program grant, along with an additional $200,000 in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds.

When done, the park expansion will feature eight pickleball courts, a splash pad, a storage building, restroom and locker room facilities, office space, and the addition of approximately 80 parking spaces.

"The Westwoods Recreational Complex is making steady progress, and it’s exciting to watch the vision for this vibrant community space take shape," wrote the town last week.

"This project was always planned as a multi-phased construction project. With every phase, we're getting closer to delivering a high-quality destination that will be enjoyed for generations to come."

Town officials called this a "transformational project" and "a major investment in Farmington’s future."

Project highlights include expanded onsite parking, brand-new water and sewer infrastructure, sidewalks, and the construction of permanent bathrooms and locker rooms.

Specialized drainage systems are also being installed to support the much-anticipated splash pad, laying the groundwork for years of fun and safe recreation.

In the coming months, crews will continue work on interior finishes for the bathroom facility, sitework, and drainage.

Each step brings us closer to opening a fully completed complex for all to enjoy.

While the splash pad is substantially complete, it will not be ready for use this summer, as the site continues to be an active construction zone.

While we understand there is a desire to open the splash pad now, safety remains our top priority.

As a result, the splash pad will not open this season.

By fall, the site should be substantially complete; therefore, the pickleball courts may open at this time.

"We know residents are eager to get out and play, and we’re just as excited to open the space as soon as it’s safe and ready," wrote the town.

"We appreciate your continued support, patience, and enthusiasm throughout this process. Together, we’re building something special, and we can’t wait to welcome you when the gates open."
